A recent survey has revealed an alarming rise in antibiotic misuse among Liberian women. The findings – showing that nine in 10 women use these drugs monthly to manage their menstrual cycles – have been described by experts as “frightening.” There are growing fears that this practice will rapidly accelerate antibacterial resistance across the country.
The misuse of antibiotics has long troubled the Liberian medical community. Health authorities are concerned that medications relied upon to treat common diseases, such as malaria, typhoid fever, and diarrhea, may soon become ineffective for patients in dire need.
A 2021 study by Washington University found that antimicrobial resistance was responsible for over 4,000 premature deaths that year, making it the fifth leading cause of death in Liberia. Experts warn that the situation has only worsened in the five years since.
